COP15: Bending the Curve of Nature Loss

Southern Cross Botanicals joins business voices in run-up to U.N. Biodiversity Summit.

With a strong focus on the sustainable use and preservation of natural resources, our division Southern Cross Botanicals specializes in producing botanical actives and plant extracts from a vast range of native Australian plants. For this reason, the conservation of biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components has always been at the heart of SCB values.

Biodiversity and nature are also top of mind for the world right now. In October 2021, the United Nations will host the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), an important global dialogue and a pivotal moment for business, as COP15 is expected to lead to the adoption of a 'Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.'

In the lead-up to COP15, David Smith from SCB was proud to participate in an interactive online panel discussion on Tuesday, October 5th on how to make sure corporate actions truly are working to ‘bend the curve’ of nature loss by slowing down or halting biodiversity loss and then restoring nature through smart nature-based solutions. The online event was attended by more than 400 people and served to inspire, engage and rally the business sector’s voices during this important moment in time.

Sourcing with Respect

During the presentation, a wide range of leaders presented their company’s actions towards biodiversity. David Smith shared his insights about SCB's ethical sourcing commitments through 2025, including their membership as of 2020 in the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), a nonprofit association that promotes sourcing with respect, made up of member companies in the natural ingredient supply chains for the food, cosmetics and natural pharmaceutical sectors. In June 2021, SCB was one of 35 other companies in committing to the UEBT's ‘Action Agenda for Nature and People,’ a declaration of support for the Global Biodiversity Framework that is expected to be adopted at COP15.
