The inflammatory response in human skin was long believed to be a 2-phase process with the initiation when damage happens followed by amplification with the massive release of pro-inflammatory mediators while the return to homeostasis was seen as passive as the healing was just “happening”.
Recent studies have demonstrated the inflammatory response is a 3-phase active process with the addition of the resolution phase, found to be mandatory to allow the return to homeostasis, with the discovery of molecules called Specialized Pro-resolving mediators (SPM).
